On-card, sticker, and cut autos — what you’re buying

Cut signature — a piece of a hand-signed item (a cut) embedded into a card, typically a 1/1. A specialty niche, and one where authentication of the underlying signature is everything.

A note on “rookie autographs”

Here’s a detail that trips up a lot of buyers: there is no true Kobe rookie-year autograph. His rookie season was 1996-97, before certified on-card rookie autos (RPAs) were a standard format, so the flagship 1996-97 rookies — the Topps, Chrome and Fleer cards in our checklist — are not signed cards.
