For Kobe, graded is the default — not a luxury. His cards are among the most reprinted and most counterfeited in the hobby, and a slab from a recognized grader answers the two questions that decide a purchase: is it real, and what condition is it really in?

Graded Cards: what a Kobe collector should know

Why graded is the default for Kobe specifically

Two things make Kobe unusual. His 1996-97 rookies were printed in enormous quantities and then reprinted — often marked "RP" or "printed," often not — so raw copies carry authenticity risk that a slab removes. And his signature is one of the most forged in the hobby, which makes certified and graded autographs the only sane way to buy signed.

The other half is condition. Mid-90s cardboard was cut imprecisely and its foil-and-chrome finishes scratch easily, so the gap between a strong grade and a weak one on the *same card number* is enormous. A grade converts "looks nice in the photo" into a number both sides agree on.

Read our reprint-identification guide before you consider any raw 1996-97 rookie.

How to read a slab label

Every legitimate label carries the same elements: the grading service, the year and set, the card number, the grade, and a certification number. For autographs there's typically a separate autograph grade or an authentication notation.

The cert number is the part that matters most, because it is verifiable. Every major service — PSA, BGS/Beckett, SGC — lets you look a cert up on its own site and confirm that the card described there matches the card in front of you. A mismatch between the label and the lookup is the end of the conversation.

Do this before you pay, on every graded purchase, from every seller. It takes under a minute and it defeats the most common graded-card scams outright.

Counterfeit slabs are a real category of fraud

Because "just buy it graded" became standard advice, counterfeiters moved up the chain and started faking the slab — fake labels, real slabs re-sealed around a swapped card, and cloned cert numbers. The cert lookup above defeats all three; the physical tells (label print quality, font weight, the feel of the case seam, holograms that should shift) catch the rest.

Our fake-slab guide walks through each con type, and the fake-autograph guide covers the signed side.

Which grader, and is grading worth it?

The services are not interchangeable — they differ in resale liquidity, subgrades, slab style, turnaround and cost, and the right choice depends on the card. PSA vs. BGS vs. SGC for Kobe cards maps service to card type.

If you're deciding whether to submit something you already own, run it through the grading-ROI calculator first, and measure the card with the centering calculator — centering is the most common reason a submission comes back below the grade the owner expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I verify a Kobe graded card is legitimate?
Look up the certification number on the grading service's own website — PSA, Beckett and SGC all offer free cert lookups — and confirm the year, set, card number and grade shown there match the label and the card. Do this before paying. It defeats fake labels, swapped cards and cloned certs.
Should I buy Kobe cards raw or graded?
Graded, for anything you care about. Kobe's 1996-97 rookies were heavily reprinted and his signature is heavily forged, so a slab from a recognized service removes both the authenticity risk and the condition argument at once.
Which grading service is best for Kobe cards?
It depends on the card. The services differ in resale liquidity, subgrades, slab style, cost and turnaround; our PSA vs. BGS vs. SGC guide maps each service to the card types it suits best.
